“To each his own campsite,” one might say. Almost literally. This year, the Netherlands holds the largest number of campsites in the EU in terms of population. Because while it is true that France holds the numerical record in absolute terms, the country of tulips ranks first based on the ratio of campsites to the number of inhabitants.
The Netherlands has 151 campsites per 1 million inhabitants, as calculated by the industry organization Kampeer en Caravan Industrie (KCI) based on data from the statistical agency Eurostat. France has more than 8,100 campsites, or 120 per 1 million inhabitants.
Based on the same number of inhabitants, Germany has 38, and Belgium 30. In the Mediterranean basin, although tourism is a mainstay of some states’ economies, Spain has 39, and Italy 28.
KCI President Leo Diepemaat states: “In the Netherlands, as in the case of cycling, camping is much more popular than in neighboring countries and even than in southern Europe.” A cultural factor then, but also a logic akin to immersive tourism that allows a stay in close contact with nature. This trend is increasingly popular among Dutch campers, confirmed by the president’s words, “There are currently 618,000 campers and caravans in the Netherlands, 11,000 more than a year ago.”
