Veneto: positive numbers in open-air tourism that tops Italian rankings for first eight months 2024

May and June were a rainy incipit to the summer season, but the weather did not limit the rise of outdoor summer tourism, which is increasingly thriving and in demand in Veneto. Not only does the region excel in the number of available beds, which correspond to 17.7 percent of the national total, but also in the tourist movement generated by this sector, again this year despite small variations.

In 2023, more than 3 million arrivals, i.e., overnight tourists, will be counted, with a total of more than 20 million overnight stays, the term used to refer to overnight stays. These figures represent historical records, achieved thanks to the sudden growth in 2023 (+9.1 percent arrivals and +6.5 percent overnight stays), mainly due to the foreign component.

The most recent data, still provisional, for January-August 2024 record +0.7 percent in arrivals and -2.0 percent in presences for the Veneto open air. While arrivals are up slightly, there is a decrease in attendance, which compares with the previous year’s boom.

According to statistics, foreign clientele prefers seaside and lake destinations, and cities of art, in the mountains, on the other hand, domestic clientele equals foreign clientele, while at spas, 81 percent of open-air attendance is made by Italians.

In the first eight months of the year, however, tourism in the Veneto region marks positive percentage changes compared to 2023 mainly due to foreign guests, who grew by 5.1 percent in arrivals and 3.3 percent in presences, compared to a drop in Italians of 2.2 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively.

Veneto Region Tourism Councillor Federico Caner comments on data on the trend of arrivals and presences between January and August 2024, provided by the Regional Statistics Office: “If we limit ourselves to August, the month sees +4.6 percent in arrivals and +1.6 percent in presences compared to the same month in 2023, showing a boom in tourist flows especially at the seaside, lake and mountains. The three summer months, June, July and August, record stability in arrivals compared to the same period last year (-0.4 percent), while presences drop by 2.1 percent, mainly due to a June that was not good weather-wise.”

He continues: “A positive trend towards new experiences, in line with the needs of a tourist attentive to sustainability and looking for moments in contact with nature, not necessarily in the periods traditionally linked to vacations, such as summer, but rather out of season, is confirmed for the summer that has just ended. And it is this that consolidates growth trends for the Veneto, which remains a leading hospitality region nationwide, thanks in part to the work of our entrepreneurs and the entire tourism supply chain “.
