Outdoor tourism on the rise: European campgrounds exceed 413 million overnight stays

Outdoor tourism continues to be one of the most dynamic sectors of the European tourism industry. According to the latest data released by Eurostat, campsites in European Union countries recorded a total of 413 million overnight stays in 2025, marking a 28.5% increase compared to 2015.

This result confirms that camping is no longer just an alternative vacation option. It is a choice that is increasingly popular among families, couples, and travelers seeking experiences in nature without sacrificing comfort.

France, Spain, Italy, and Germany are driving the sector

The main European markets continue to be France, Spain, Italy, and Germany—countries that account for the largest share of visitors to the continent’s campgrounds for outdoor tourism.

In recent years, the sector has undergone a profound transformation. Alongside traditional campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs, increasingly sophisticated options such as glamping, lodges, mobile homes, and next-generation bungalows have become widespread, helping to expand the audience for outdoor tourism.

An ever-evolving sector

The growth reported by Eurostat also reflects the investments made by European operators. More and more campgrounds are focusing on the quality of their hospitality. This includes environmental sustainability, the digitization of services—such as online check-in—smart energy management, solar power systems, and new experiences for guests.

Many facilities are also expanding their offerings to include wellness areas, swimming pools, family-friendly services, sports activities, and food and wine experiences, transforming themselves into full-fledged resorts nestled in nature.

A positive sign for Italy as well

Our country remains one of Europe’s leading destinations for outdoor tourism. These figures are an encouraging sign. Italy continues to stand out for the quality of its lodging facilities, the diversity of its regions, and its growing focus on innovation and sustainability.

Data released by Eurostat confirm that outdoor tourism is experiencing a period of structural growth. The goal is to further strengthen the role of campgrounds in Europe’s tourism offerings in the coming years.
