Compared with hotel facilities, camping is also an ideal solution for saving money, a sustainable proposition with minimal impact on ecosystems. Here is everything you need to know to experience an unforgettable trip.<\/p>\n\n

When to camp in Iceland<\/h2>\n\n

There is a saying in Iceland, “If you don’t like the weather now, wait five minutes and you will see it change.”<\/em> The weather is known to be unpredictable; even summer can surprise you with sudden rains, cold temperatures and lots of wind, only to give way to sunshine. What remains a certainty, however, is the day-night alternation typical of high latitudes: during the warm season, sunlight shines until midnight, a phenomenon that occurs between May 21 and July 30. A sight that could alter your rest, for this reason, if you sleep in a tent, get a mask for a good night’s sleep. <\/p>\n\n

Thepeak tourist season <\/strong>in Iceland starts in late May and ends in August<\/strong>, ideal for those who wish to camp in tents. April <\/strong>and September<\/strong> are quieter times, perfect for RV travelers. Campgrounds are usually open from April through September, but some remain open during the fall and winter months<\/strong>, the most challenging but extremely fascinating part of the year, especially for seeing the Northern Lights. The advice is always to check the availability of facilities early as specific opening dates may vary from year to year, especially campsites located in more remote or weather-prone areas, most of which are only accessible from June to August.<\/p>\n\n

Safe travel<\/h2>\n\n

On this island located north of the Atlantic, kissed by the Gulf Stream and Arctic winds, it would take a crystal ball to accurately predict the weather. The possibility of high winds and sudden rainfall arriving can surprise you at any time, variables that make even the simple action of pitching a tent or sleeping inside it difficult.<\/p>\n\n

Bad weather could also make roads inaccessible<\/strong>. Therefore, it is important to check the weather forecast despite the fact that it is not 100% reliable. Good rule of thumb is to consult the website \n \n Safe Travel Iceland<\/em>\n <\/strong>\n<\/a> which alerts you in real time of any weather alerts, roads closed or exposed to weather-related hazards. Viability is an essential factor in Iceland, and another aspect to keep in mind when driving is to check for amenities along the route.<\/p>\n\n

You must always point out that this is a sparsely populated country with huge distances completely uninhabited<\/strong>. It is essential to travel with a supply of enough food and water, have a charged phone and any external chargers or batteries, and wear technical clothing even in summer. Beware of free camping<\/h2>\n\n

In November 2015, the Icelandic Tourist Board unveiled new legislation making changes to the areas where camping is allowed. This shift was put in place to manage the increasing number of visitors, preserve wilderness, and protect private property.<\/p>\n\n

Following the new regulations, \u00e8<\/strong> Illegal to camp in tents, caravans, RVs, 4X4 vehicles with a tent on the roof or similar outside of a designated campground, regardless of where you are in the country<\/strong>, except for written permission from the landowner allowing you to camp with your tent or mobile structure.<\/strong> Those who stay without a permit outside the designated areas will incur a penalty and be forced to clean up the illegally occupied land.<\/p>\n\n

By law you will not find campsites within Iceland’s three national parks: Thingvellir National Park, Vatnajokull National Park and Snaefellsjokull National Park<\/em>. As many locations do not have accommodation offerings, so check for available areas in a timely manner. <\/p>\n\n

Small green attentions<\/h2>\n\n

Camping in Iceland is a beautiful experience, in close contact with nature. Remember to always respect it, and take small steps to protect it starting with the soil: be very careful not to lift or move the moss<\/strong> that covers much of the landscape, as it grows very slowly and the impact on it could last for decades. Whether it is a tent, RV or caravan, set up and organize with respect for your surroundings, do not light fires as they are prohibited<\/strong>, and be sure to leave the area clean with no trash<\/strong>, exactly as you found it.
