A new wave of severe weather struck the eastern coast of Spain with extraordinary intensity, causing dramatic flooding. The isolated high-altitude low-pressure system known as Storm Adam dumped record amounts of rain across the provinces of Valencia and Alicante. In just a few hours, up to 700 millimeters of rain fell, causing rivers and streams to suddenly burst their banks in various coastal areas.

Local authorities have issued a red alert with a strict order to remain safe in homes or on the upper floors of buildings. The tragic toll, unfortunately, includes three confirmed fatalities and entire towns submerged in mud, with roads completely blocked by debris. The force of the floodwaters has necessitated complex rescue operations conducted both on the ground and by civil defense helicopters.

Among the most critical situations is the immediate evacuation of campgrounds in Valencia and in the popular tourist destinations along the nearby coast. In Oliva, a well-known seaside resort in the region, Mayor Yolanda Pastor confirmed the rapid evacuation of more than 2,000 people from seven campgrounds. Water quickly flooded the paths and campsites, making prompt intervention by law enforcement essential.

In the nearby town of Xàbia as well, about 100 tourists were evacuated from a completely submerged outdoor area and transported to shelters. Volunteers from the Red Cross and the local government set up facilities to provide immediate assistance, hot meals, and blankets to the displaced campers. Fortunately, the swift and coordinated response prevented any injuries or fatalities within the affected campsites and outdoor facilities.

The climate emergency has once again demonstrated the critical importance of emergency plans and modern early-warning systems in lodging facilities. Alerts sent directly to cell phones via the emergency system guided tourists to higher ground before the flood. Many campers had to abandon their tents, trailers, and RVs, relying on the quick response of the campground staff and first responders.

The proper execution of every evacuation at campsites in Valencia highlights just how essential direct collaboration between tourism operators and authorities is. Outdoor facilities located near coastlines or bodies of water will increasingly need to invest in hydraulic infrastructure and safety drills. For the outdoor recreation sector, timely prevention and transparent communication with travelers are now the primary means of saving lives.
