The first barometer of open-air accommodation structures was born in France, which has the task of collecting and disseminating all the numbers of this sector in order to intercept its trends and prospects. The project, carried out by Atout, the Fédération nationale de l’hôtellerie de plein air and Adn Tourisme, started this year by collecting data from over 1,200 campsites, but the goal is to reach over 2,000 structures by 2023.
Fundamental for the reliability of the data is the collaboration with France Tourisme Observation, which has automated the computer processing of the statistics, concerning around eight million stays a week.
Based on the first data disclosed, there was a 16% increase in overnight stays in 2022 compared to 2021 (139.2 million) and a significant increase in the presence of foreign customers, especially English (+595%). In general, as with the rest of Europe, 2022 was also a record year for French campsites.
