The data from the Observatory of Outdoor Tourism have not only confirmed positive numbers for 2022, but also revealed a new appeal of the en plein air sector. If the pandemic has prompted more and more travelers to choose an outdoor experience due to the restrictions, the entry of technology has made campsites and tourist villages turn the page.
“Thanks to technology, outdoor experiences have now become mainstream: the outdoor universe is no longer considered as cheap, difficult and for the few but has become cool, easy and within anyone’s reach”, reads the report of the Observatory. “In the same way, the evolution of needs has made the open air a service delivery to allow guests to better enjoy their stay both inside the structures (from pitches to the restaurant and shopping offer) and outside, with a wide and diversified range of experiences”.
Two possible scenarios for camping villages
In the light of the consequences brought by the war in Ukraine and the calculation of some statistical data offered by Istat and Eurostat on the open air sector, it is possible to outline two reference scenarios for the near future:
“The best hypothesis sees 48 million visitors with a growth forecast compared to last year (+8%) and close to the pre-Covid results of 2019 (-14%), with a total generated expenditure of 2.55 billion euros compared to an average expenditure of 53 euros per day per guest. The Italian market stands at 26 million presences in campsites and villages, with a decrease of only 5.2% compared to the pre-pandemic results of 2019”.
“The worst case scenario – continues the report – estimates a presence that would amount to 45.4 million, marking a substantial standstill compared to last summer’s levels (+2%) and with a more marked decline compared to 2019 (-18% ) for an economic impact of 2.41 billion euro. In this case it is the foreign market that slows down attendance, while the Italian one remains essentially stable with 25 million (+8% compared to 2021 and the same percentage but down on the 2019)”.
All the factors that are driving the camping sector
Not only technology, but also wellness, green, sharing economy and contaminations are pushing outdoor experiences ever higher. The natural well-being that generates relaxation, the sustainability of the choice that includes the entire use of the holiday, the arrival of sharing platforms such as Click&Boat or the glamping entrance have revolutionized the sector to the point of pushing it to less uncertain forecasts in the coming years.
