The American startup Autonomous Tent Co. has introduced a form of luxury camping, thinking of a tent structured to approximate the experience of a boutique hotel.
The Autonomous Tents adventure began in 2013, when the startup installed the first structure in California. The goal was – precisely – to create the first transportable 5-star boutique hotel in the world, destined to be located in breathtaking natural places. But there was a twist: the hotel would be completely powered by sun and wind and would make use of the most advanced water filtering and composting technologies. The impact on the environment would therefore have been minimal.
The Autonomous Tent, designed by architect Harry Gesner, is a permanent structure that can be assembled and dismantled quickly, ensuring flexibility and sustainability. In 2016, the initiative debuted on the market and has continued to evolve since then.
One of the latest innovations is the creation of a smaller version of the tent, with insulation options that exceed international energy codes. These micro-cabins, with the stability of a permanent structure, can be assembled in a few days and dismantled without leaving a trace in the surrounding environment. The dimensions can also be customized, with surfaces ranging from 700 to 1,000 square meters, high ceilings and an imposing entrance that highlights the surrounding views.
The tent can be purchased, but you can stay in one of the facilities where it is available for rent for short periods, such as the one located in Big Sur in California. At these facilities, the units are powered by dedicated solar systems, ensuring guests have a luxury ‘off grid tent’ experience in one of the most luxurious and private locations in the area.
Inside the Autonomous Tents, guests find spacious living space, modern amenities, bamboo floors and 12-foot-high ceilings. The main seating area offers comfort with leather chairs and sofas, ceiling fans and eco-sensitive lighting. The en suite bathroom features a fully tiled roll-in shower, a separate vanity area and a lighted mirror. Additionally, there is a small refrigerator, hanging space, and a large outdoor terrace with a fire pit and designer pieces.
