In 2024, the camping sector is proving to be the “big winner” of tourism in Spain, as highlighted by data from theNational Institute of Statistics (INE) and reported Spanish by HOSTELTUR in the article “Record extra-hotel overnight stays in 2023: 137 million.” The data confirm the extraordinary moment the sector is going through in the Iberian Peninsula.
The 2023 data of camping in Spain
For more than a decade, Spanish campgrounds have experienced steady growth both in overnight stays and in the number of domestic and foreign travelers . The global crisis caused by the pandemic has underscored the benefits of accommodation in direct contact with nature. This is also why campgrounds ended the year with a historic achievement, welcoming about 10 million travelers. A number that contrasts sharply with the six million in 2014. In the past year alone, there has been a 4.7 percent increase over 2022 and a 19.8 percent increase over the pre-pandemic data in 2019. Regarding overnight stays, there were over 47.28 million in 2023, marking an increase of 46.4 percent compared to 2014, 16.1 percent compared to 2019, and 5.3 percent in comparison to 2022.
Spanish camping sector gained more weight
This boom is not only reflected in official statistical data, but also translates into greater weight and recognition within the national tourism sector, as the Spanish Federation of Campgrounds (FEEC) points out. Campsites are gaining ground in their contribution to Spain’s national GDP and in their representation to tourism boards and government administrations. They also record outstanding reception at major tourism fairs, both nationally and internationally.
Ana Beriaín‘s statements
FEEC President Ana Beriaín says the 2023 figures “are definitive proof that the sector already has an indisputable and unstoppable weight within national tourism. Success is the result of decades of commitment and relentless work by the entrepreneurs in the industry“. However, FEEC President Beriaín stresses that the campgrounds “are not satisfied and aim to continue the growth, convincing thousands of families to discover what nearly 10 million people enjoyed last year.”
