In the Netherlands, you know, the clouds run fast. Even in summer, when the sun seems to gild the verdant landscapes, here comes the rain, cool and invigorating. Whatever the weather, the Dutch love to live outdoors, so it is no coincidence that their love of camping is recognized around the world, so much so that this small country (in size) ranks on the podium of European Union states with the highest number of campsites per capita. According to the Kampeer en Caravan Industrie (KCI), based on the data Eurostat, the Netherlands has almost the highest number of campsites per person on the continent .
Ranked first in Europe is France, second the Orange, followed by Croatia, which takes the podium in third place with the highest number of campsites per capita.
The Netherlands has a beauty of 151 campsites per 1 million inhabitants (2,681 campsites in total). Large numbers when compared to Germany, which records much lower numbers despite its “fame” in the open-air tourism sector, with 38 campsites per 1 million inhabitants. It is also surpassed by Italy, which has 39 campsites per 1 million inhabitants, while Spain records 28 campsites per 1 million inhabitants.
Excellent result for the Netherlands, where camping is an integral part of Dutch culture. According to KCI President Leo Diepemaat: “These statistics prove once again that camping is an inseparable part of Dutch culture… As in the case of cycling, for example, camping is much more popular than in our neighboring countries and even more popular than in southern Europe“.
