Holidays and prices. Here’s where camping is cheaper

Rising electricity prices and inflation have had a significant impact on the prices of products and services, including in the tourism sector. This effect also extended to the cost of camping, as demonstrated by a list prepared by PinCAMP, the ADAC campsite portal.

According to the ranking, in 2023 campsite prices increased by an average of 7% in Europe. A family with a child will have to pay an average of 55.7 euros per night for an overnight camping stay in the high summer season, including pitching the tent and electricity. Among the cheapest countries are Germany and Sweden, with an average price of 42.6 euros and 39 euros per night respectively. However, camping holidays in Croatia and Italy are the most expensive, with prices at €69.3 and €65.8 per night, respectively. It is important to note that the list only covers the 11 most popular caravanning countries in Europe, so some countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic or Lithuania are not included.

Croatia took first place in the campsite price ranking for the first time with an average price increase of 15%. This increase can be partly explained by the increase in the quality of the camping offer and the adoption of the euro as a currency. The country that was formerly the leader, Switzerland, saw only a slight increase in house prices, of 2.5%, and is now in third place after Italy.

Among other European countries, Austria had the third largest price increase with almost 11%. In the UK, on the other hand, camping prices fell by almost 10%, to 47.1 euros per night. This drop is largely attributable to the weakening of the British pound and the UK’s exit from the European Union.

Campsite prices vary throughout the season, with higher prices possibly discouraging tourists from travelling. Some campsites offer lower prices during low season or when there is less occupancy, so booking in advance can be an effective strategy, especially in very popular places like Italy and Croatia.

The increase in prices in individual countries was mainly influenced by inflation, increases in electricity prices and changes in exchange rates.
