Summer 2022 is getting closer and closer and travelers are looking forward to leaving and spending their holidays outdoors along the boot. “The excitement can be felt since the month of January, when the searches for en plein air stays started from June to August, but it is between March and April, with the arrival of spring, that there was a boom which has returned the sector to pre-pandemic levels “, states the latest report by Campeggi.com, underlining that in the first quarter of 2022 the site recorded an increase in searches equal to 150% more than in 2021 and 8% compared to 2019.
“After two complex years, 2022 looks like the year of recovery for the whole world of tourism and the outdoor holiday sector is no exception”, explains Cristian Capizzi, CEO of Koobcamp. “As the data show, in fact, the trend has returned to the levels recorded before the pandemic, especially within national borders. For obvious reasons, in 2020 the situation moved only in the first half of May, in 2021 in April, while this year the reservations for the summer period arrived as early as January: Italians can’t wait to leave. A great season awaits us”.
In the first quarter of 2022, leading the ranking of the most searched destinations is Tuscany, in first place with 13% of searches, closely followed by Veneto (12%) and followed closely by Puglia (11%). The top 5 are closed by Sardinia (10%) and Marche (8%).
From the point of view of the type of accommodation, preferences fall in most cases on holiday villages, chosen by 63% of users, followed by glamping (16%), camping (12%) and pitches for campers (9%), a sign that for most travelers choosing an en plein air holiday does not necessarily mean giving up on comfort. From north to south, users are looking in particular for pet-friendly facilities (19%), to spend their holidays with their four-legged friends, but among the most sought-after campsites and holiday villages there are also those by the sea (16% ) and those dedicated to families (12%), followed by those with direct access to the beach (9%) or with swimming pool (8%).
The searches, which take place on average four months before the check-in date, are carried out in 70% of cases through mobile devices, a well-established habit among Italians. As for the duration, however, almost half of travelers aim for outdoor holidays that last an average of 14 nights (43%), while 32% prefer stays of one week. The outdoor holidays along Italy once again conquer the neighbors from beyond the Alps. According to the camping report, in fact, the searches carried out by Germany in the first quarter of 2022 grew by 54% compared to those recorded in the same period of the previous year.
