Outdoor tourism, scenarios and prospects at Balnearia

Eighty-one percent of outdoor accommodations in Tuscany insist on the coastal strip. This is a constantly growing form of vacation. This was discussed at the Balnearia Fair, during the meeting “Outdoor tourism, scenarios and prospects”, organized by Mondo Balneare and Mondo Camping, with Enrico Paoli, director of Faita Toscana, Alessandro Tortelli, director of the Center for Tourism Studies, and Federico Della Giovanna, general manager WannaCamp.

Enrico Paoli, Director Faita Tuscany: “The sector has been working for years now, there has been a strong increase in arrivals and presences. Already in 2023 it had equaled the numbers of 2019, the pre-pandemic period. It is a sector in which entrepreneurs invest, rewarded then by an increasing number of tourists who choose open-air facilities to spend their vacations. The presence of foreign tourists is great: the entrepreneurs themselves want to boost the proposal to meet their needs as this is a type of high-spending tourism that chooses our facilities precisely because they have transformed over time. We have witnessed and continue to witness an evolution of the open-air tourism proposal that allows people to stay outdoors in facilities that offer maximum comfort and all services, including luxury.”

Alessandro Tortelli, Director of the Center for Tourism Studies: “Until 2023 we have seen a strong recovery in open-air tourism. The first data we analyzed on Tuscany in 2024 give us a bit of difficulty, due to the Italian market that is decreasing the average stay in these facilities, bearing in mind that they are facilities for 81 percent located on coastal areas of the region. However, the open air market is having a further growth in terms of foreign markets: in 2024 a very strong vitality of the open air was noticed. The outlook for 2025/2026 is catching up, but still focused on foreign markets, and the other aspect that is emerging is the increasingly active search for Experiences that increasingly involve businesses in organizing real tourism experiences.”

Federico Della Giovanna, general manager WannaCamp: “WannaCamp is a platform that on the one hand helps tourists as a one-stop booking system based on geographical location, reviews, prices and services offered by campsites. It can also find all the required information of the facility. On the other hand, with this application, we want to help facility managers by trying to offer the possibility to greatly increase visibility in national and international markets. It is also proposed as a management system to help facility owners automate all these processes. To sum up, WannaCamp wants to make itself known in the world of outdoor tourism as a search engine for all the facilities present, for now, in Italy, and as a single booking system for all tourists and fans of the open air sector.”
