Tourist season 2023: historic record in Italy

The Ministry of Tourism, in cooperation with ISTAT, has released data on the tourist season of the year 2023, which is the result of the activities of the Interinstitutional Working Group on Tourism “Web Lodgers.” The group was formed under the Memorandum of Understanding “Development and Enhancement of Statistical Information on Tourism” between the Ministry of Tourism and ISTAT.

The report speaks for itself: 2023 recorded more than 134 million arrivals and 451 million presences in accommodation establishments in the country. These values are the highest ever observed by tourism surveys, thus exceeding the pre-pandemic levels of 2019: +3.0 million arrivals (+2.3 percent) and +14.5 million presences (+3.3 percent). Compared to 2022, overall growth in arrivals is estimated at 13.4 percent and attendance at 9.5 percent.

An encouraging result for the outdoor tourism sector as well: arrivals and presences in the non-hotel sector grow by 16.9 percent and 11.0 percent over 2022, showing larger increases than those in the hotel sector (+11.5 percent and +8.1 percent).

Remarkable was the contribution of Italian Open Air tourism facilities, which contributed 11 million arrivals and 69 million presences for 2,600 companies and represents the most dynamic and constantly growing sector in the non-hotel sector.

After the pandemic period (2020-2022), the data shows that the foreign component of the clientele, once again prevails over the domestic one: in 2023, 52.4 percent of tourist presences are referred to non-Italian resident clients.

Tourism Minister Santanchè said, “Numbers never lie. Italy is returning to the place it deserves on the world tourism scene. The historical trend record highlighted by the estimates we are presenting today thanks to the joint work of the Ministry and ISTAT is not a random result but the result of a targeted strategy that puts tourism at the center of government policies.

A sector that is growing more than others by virtue of the ability of entrepreneurs to exalt the best that Italy has to offer and an executive that creates the best conditions to allow businesses to operate with maximum effectiveness. The measures on tourism, together with the professionalism expressed by those working in the sector, have brought about a marked change in gear with an unprecedented impact.”
