Catalonia launches pilot project for campground safety

The 2nd Congress of Campsites of Catalonia was held last Thursday, April 16, at the Catalan municipality of La Seu d’Urgell. The meeting, organized by the Catalan Camping Federation (FCC), was attended by more than 300 industry professionals, institutional representatives, and national and international experts.

Two days of work for a key event that covered topics of great relevance to the Catalan open air industry, such as the impact of climate change, early warning weather systems, coordination with emergency services, the application of new technologies and artificial intelligence to the sector, and risk management.

Regarding this last important focus, the pilot project for campground safety was presented. As reported by the Camping Profesional, a reference for the Catalan and Spanish open air, the initiative was created with the support of the autonomous administration and responds to the new context characterized by climate change, regulatory evolution and the need to improve the sector’s operational preparedness in the face of possible accidents.

The structure of the project

The training plan for risk management and emergency response capacity in campgrounds will have two distinct phases:

  • Phase One: awareness days and technical training aimed at campground owners, municipal managers and professionals involved in self-protection plans.
  • Second phase: conduct of simulations and practical exercises coordinated with the Generalitat‘s emergency corps, with the aim of strengthening the real capacity to intervene in risk situations.

The pilot phases will begin in the province of Girona, with plans to expand later to the entire Catalan territory.

As reported by Camping Profesional, during the opening of the congress, FCC Chairman, Miquel Gotanegra, stressed that Catalan camping’s European leadership requires continued progress in areas such as prevention, safety and professionalization.

Catalonia currently has 352 campsites and 267,545 pitches. According to data provided by the federation, the sector exceeded 21 million overnight stays in 2025, which represents more than 30 percent of the region’s total tourism. The FCC groups together 85 percent of the camping pitches in Catalonia. With these numbers, Catalan open air confirms itself as a sector of great relevance capable of evolving with new plans and projects for the increasingly competitive making of the sector, always putting safety at the center.
