Every year, throughout France, 60-80 small campsites close. Facilities have shrunk by 40 percent in the past 30 years. These campgrounds represent resources for local tourism, with their activities creating income for the industry and the area. FNHPA agreed to take action to address the problem with an action plan dedicated to saving and revitalizing small campgrounds.
Small campsites without collateral at banks
Eric Legros, president of the Regional Federation of Outdoor Hotels (FRHPA) Grand Est, pointed out that the main financial challenge is the difficulty in obtaining guarantees for bank loans. The project of the national federation of French campgrounds aims to reexamine the relationship and forge better partnerships with banking institutions.
Protection and support for French camping
The project to protect small French campsites aims to involve all profiles of campground operators, from upgrading existing ones to acquiring new business assets. Eric Legros explained further that the support covers all management possibilities, except for campgrounds, which the communities intend to keep under public management.
Public campsites are the weakest
Most of the campgrounds closing their doors are municipally run, exposing the entire territorial network “at risk” and reducing the economic income of the entire French camping world. The support plan is designed to actively engage the property before closure, including proposing private management solutions. A detailed presentation of the project took place during the last edition of the Iode Fair, through a dedicated workshop organized on January 31, 2024, led by Eric Legros himself.
