Italian tourism has returned to good health and Italy has once again become one of the most popular destinations for national and international tourism. The 2022 forecasts of the Demoskopika institute have turned into real numbers, as happened for example for the city of Rome: the capital (which is worth 9% of GDP in terms of tourism) saw a recovery at Easter 2022 of 74% on 2019, with an estimate of 270,000 arrivals from abroad and 670,000 presences per day just a few weeks after the same holiday this year. According to the Bilateral Tourist Board of Lazio, in 2022 tourists more than doubled, reaching 15 million compared to 2021.
Easter and the long weekends of April 25 and May 1 will also see Italians in strong movement with the favorite cities of art, followed by seaside and mountain resorts as well as lakes. This demonstrates the good health of the open-air sector as well, which had an excellent season in 2022, surpassing the data of 2019 and putting the sad parenthesis of Covid-19 behind it.
Even Confcommercio for businesses has confirmed an effective return to normality and a definitive relaunch. “After two years of pandemic and a total loss of around 24 billion euros, 2022 would seem to have been the year of return to normality” – reads the document shared by Confcommercio last February -. It happens despite the period of great uncertainty due both to the conflict in Ukraine and to the rises in energy and raw material prices, the data for the Easter holidays are very reassuring”.
After spring, positive forecasts also come for summer. The data for 2022 continue to bode well for 2023 as well. According to the estimates of the Confturismo Observatory, around 28 million Italians will be leaving between June and September: a weekend in June, a short break between July and early August and a holidays of at least 7 days in August are the most popular programmes. Holidaymakers will spend an average of 300 euros each for a weekend, 540 for a holiday of between 3 and 6 days and 1,250 for a holiday of at least seven days, for a total of around 47 billion euros which will flow into the national economy .
Pending the new data on the trend of the camping sector and tourist villages, the estimates released last year by Faita-Federcamping still apply, according to which the 2022 season had shown a strong recovery in demand. Lastly, according to the data presented at the TTG, the trade fair to promote world tourism in Italy, last year arrivals in Italian campsites and tourist villages reached 10.7 million for a total of 73 million of which 57% are foreigners.
The positive result is due to the massive return of arrivals, especially from Germany and Austria, followed by Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland.
