Camping is a very popular option in Europe, particularly in France, and is always suitable for many types of holidaymakers. Today the sector is also adapting to new ecological requirements and is making major efforts to reduce its environmental impact. So, let’s see how to recognize an ecological campsite.
What is an ecological campsite
By ecological camping or eco-camping we mean a structure committed to a policy of sustainable development and respect for the environment. Generally, these campsites have a label certifying that they meet a number of environmental criteria. However, other campsites have also adopted practices and processes to preserve the environment, although they are not yet “labeled”. The main characteristics of an ecological campsite include:
- Insertion in the natural environment through its location and its facilities.
- Conservation of local fauna and flora.
- Promotion of renewable energies.
- Reduction of waste and practice of differentiated collection.
- Preference for local products.
- Communication to visitors on the importance of environmental protection.
There are different types of labels for ecological campsites and in particular three main labels, two of which are international, assigned to ecological campsites. These labels are intended for all eco-friendly accommodations that meet the criteria defined by their respective labels. In addition to campsites, there are also ecological hotels and holiday villages that can obtain these certifications.
- European Ecolabel: This label is intended to highlight products or services with low environmental impact. In France, it is issued by the AFNOR Certification. The European Ecolabel criteria for camping services include the use of renewable energy sources, saving energy and water, reducing waste and improving the local environment.
- Green Key: This international brand certifies environmentally friendly accommodation facilities. It is managed and developed in France by the Teragir association and is the leading eco-label for housing. Certification criteria include site environmental policy, environmental awareness, water management, waste management, energy management, responsible purchasing and framework of living.
- Camping Qualité: This label was created in 1999 and is managed by the Fédération Nationale de l’Hôtellerie de Plein Air and the Fédération des Campeurs, Caravaniers et Motorhomes. Campsites adhering to this label must respect criteria which include respect for and enhancement of the environment, as well as eco-responsible management of the site.
How to find an ecological campsite
If you are interested in staying at a certified ecological campsite, the three labels mentioned above offer a list of their members on their respective websites. You can search for eco campsites using the following methods:
- European Ecolabel: on the Afnor Procontact website, by typing the keyword “campsite” together with a specific location, you get a list of certified campsites.
- Green Key: on the La Clef Verte website, you can directly search for campsites labeled in the “type of establishment” section by selecting “campsites”. You can also use the “Facilities” menu and select “Campsites”.
- Camping Qualité: on the Camping Qualité website, you can indicate the criteria for your stay on the home page and book online. The site also offers a list of certified campsites classified by region.
In addition, some camping booking sites, such as Campings.com, offer specific “eco-responsibility” filters, which allow you to search only for campsites labeled as Green Key or Ecolabel.
In addition to certified accommodation, there are also other campsites that adopt eco-responsible practices, but are not yet labeled. Finding these campsites is however on online booking sites such as Campingdispo.fr, GreenGo and Campings Ecologiques.
